On May 20, 2016 Murphy Middle School hosted a fundraiser for G.I. Go Fund, an organization working in the veterans’ community through creating innovative, 21st century solutions to help veterans find employment, go to college, access housing, and connect to their benefits.
The students created about 1,400 paper poppy flowers, recreating the scene from the famous poem, “In Flanders Field”. This poem commemorates lives lost and battles fought in WWI. On that day, the school had veterans as guest speakers in the history classes, and the English teachers read the poem with their students and discussed how the red poppy became a symbol for remembrance.
The Exchange Club of Murphy helped recognize the sacrifice and service made by our veterans by setting up the field of honor, over 100 flags honoring our US service members. Thank you, Murphy Middle School, for letting us be part of this event.
